The ISC primary school comprises of students and teachers from multi-faceted and multi-cultural backgrounds and experiences. At ISC, we believe that children who feel safe, secure and supported, grow in confidence to explore and learn. That is why it is so important that our primary school students feel accepted, develop attachments and trust those who care for them.
At the very core of our Primary School teaching philosophy is social-emotional learning. Our teachers collaborate across the Primary and Secondary programs to ensure that our students receive the skills and the best possible support to succeed not only at the Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA) and the International Baccalaureate (IBDP), but also to teach our students to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
The ISC primary curriculum reflects our holistic beliefs in a child’s academic and social -emotional development. ISC believes in challenging each child in the areas in which they are developing, at the pace they need to develop best. It places emphasis on developing the whole child – attending to his or her social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs – to establish a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.
We aim to nurture their curiosity and enable our students to take risks, to fail and learn better in a structured environment. One way we are able to achieve this is by maintaining a small student-teacher ratio, with a maximum class size of 22 students.
Our curriculum, while based on the Schleswig-Holstein standards and curriculum, has been developed by our own teachers to include components and influences of the Montessori method and other international curricula. It draws upon the rich local culture of the greater Hamburg area as well as the diverse international cultures of world, all while keeping in mind the academic expectations of the Secondary and Diploma years.
Our faculty possess a magnitude of international experience and qualifications, including fluency in German and knowledge of local Hamburg customs and traditions to help serve as ambassadors between local and international students. This is thoughtfully combined with cutting-edge teaching practice, weekly staff training, and a focus on developing self-awareness and reflection to provide the best experiences for our students.
Subjects taught in the primary section (across all grades) include Robotics, Coding, Dance, Cooking, Science, Parkour, Ceramics, Math, German, English, Music, Textile, Lego simple machines, Calligraphy, Social Studies, Information Technology.
We also provide English as an additional language and German as an additional Language support for our language learners. All our classrooms are vibrant and colorful centers of happy activity which is reflected in our students joyful learning experiences.
